[Bang, Bang, You’re Dead]

Youth Of The Nation*
[P.O.D.* – Satellite]

Last day of the rest of my life
I wish I would’ve known
Cause I didn’t kiss my mama goodbye

I didn’t tell her that I loved her and how much I care
Or thank my pops for all the talks
And all the wisdom he shared

Unaware, I just did what I always do
Everyday, the same routine
Before I skate off to school

But who knew that this day wasn’t like the rest
Instead of taking a test
I took two to the chest

Call me blind, but I didn’t see it coming
Everybody was running
But I couldn’t hear nothing

Except gun blasts, it happened so fast
I don’t really know this kid
Even though I sit by him in class*

Maybe this kid was reaching out for love
Or maybe for a moment
He forgot who he was
Or maybe this kid just wanted to be hugged
Whatever it was
I know it’s because

We are, We are, the youth of the nation*

Little Suzy*, she was only twelve
She was given the world
With every chance to excel

Hang with the boys and hear the stories they tell
She might act kind of proud
But no respect for herself

She finds love in all the wrong places
The same situations
Just different faces

Changed up her pace since her daddy left her
Too bad he never told her
She deserved much better

Johnny boy* always played the fool
He broke all the rules
So you would think he was cool

He was never really one of the guys*
No matter how hard he tried
Often thought of suicide

It’s kind of hard when you ain’t got no friends
He put his life to an end
They might remember him then

You cross the line and there’s no turning back
Told the world how he felt
With the sound of a gat

Who’s to blame for the lives that tragedies claim*
No matter what you say
It don’t take away the pain

That I feel inside, I’m tired of all the lies
Don’t nobody know why
It’s the blind leading the blind

I guess that’s the way the story goes
Will it ever make sense
Somebody’s got to know

There’s got to be more to life than this
There’s got to be more to everything
I thought exist
.

* This song was inspired by some school shooting that took place in the United States

* P.O.D. stands for Payable Of Death

* In March 5, 2001, a student walked into school (Santana High School) with his father´s gun and fired 30 shots, killing 2 students and wounding 13 others, in Santee, California. The shooting took place near the studio where P.O.D. was recording.

* Lead singer Sonny Sandoval: “We had done a show for some kids that went to Columbine. They wanted P.O.D. to play, just for a positive encouragement type thing. And it was always in the back of our minds, like, just what are these kids going through? This is the hardest time for kids.” And the are the future of every nation. (www.songsfacts.com)

* The real victims of this shooting were 14-year-old Bryan Zuckor and 17-year-old Randy Gordon.

* The shooter was 15-year-old Charles Williams.

* Like many students across America, Williams often complained about bullying at school site and had spoken on two occasions of his plan to “pull a Columbie” (reference to the shooting that took place at the Columbine High School, Colorado, in April 20th, 1999. “After moving to Santee (from 29 Palms, California), Williams felt he was targeted for physical and emotional bullying in school. In an attempt to fit in, he began to spend time with a crowd of skateboards, with whom he would often participate in activities such as smoking marijuana. Williams was accepted within this peer group, however, at times these individuals also teased or picked on him. In February 2001, just before his 15th birthday, Williams received news that one of his best friends from 29 Plams was killed in a bus accident”. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Andrew_Williams)

* Guitarist Marcos Curiel: “[…] When we were writing this record, we wanted to be secluded so we went to Santee, in East San Diego, where we had this 35×35 rehearsal studio. One day we were on our way to practice, and we saw all these cops, but we didn’t know what was going on. Later we found out what had happened [the shooting]. It was an emotional situation. The main control room in the studio has a TV, and we’re watching the news on there, thinking, ‘Man, this is a mess.’ I’m the only one that doesn’t have kids, but everybody was like, ‘Dude, that could have been my kids in there,’ or ‘That could have been my sister’.” (www.songfacts.com)

On Top Of The World
[Boys Like Girls -Boys Like Girls]
“Look up, the stars are fading
And I am still here waiting
To see you again
Be with you my friend

When the moon is gone forever
I hope you’re up there somewhere
I’ll see you again
Be with you my friend

‘Cause all the roads they lead to where you are
And all the streetlights shine like they were stars
That’s where you are

Let’s spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything,
We can be anything
I’ll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems,
You’re only in my dreams*

Look out across the water
Faces of lonely daughters and mothers who care*
But just can’t be there*
Swear that I will see you someday*
I have to find a way
To show you I care
Even if you’re not there

So I’m following the road to where you are
(Meet you tonight on top of)
The streetlights they will guide me to the stars
That’s where you are

Let’s spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything,
We can be anything
I’ll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems,
You’re only in my dreams*

My heart is empty without you
Sometimes you don’t know what you do
And I need you tonight
I’ll fall asleep and it’s alright
Close my eyes and I’ll be by your side

Let’s spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything,
We can be anything
I’ll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems,
You’re only in my dreams

Let’s spend tonight on top of the world
(On top of the world)
As real as it seems,
You’re only in my dreams

* This song started as a romance / in love song. But later, according to Martin Johnson, lead sing and writer for BLG, the song became about a bigger kind of love.

* The song is about the love between a mother and her kid. More specific between Martin and his mom.

* Martin’s mom died when he was 16, from cancer.

* Before his mom death, he promise her that somehow they would be together again, someday. And according with what Martin says in some interviews that’s what he’s been trying to do…

* even if now the only way is with dreams.

For Justin*
[Dashboard Confessional – Drowning EP*
]
“It’s been a year now since you were here now
And I’ve been trying to heal inside
Dedications of how I placed
And I see your resemblance in my face
And on our birthday I said an extra wish for you (for you)*

And I have learned so much since you been gone
And I have done so little for so long
So now I’ll settle up my grievances
And focus on the savory
And wave all these discrepancies away
And I’ll figure out these misconceptions
Give out faith at my discretion
Live a life that you would think was sane (sane)

Displaying changes
That they have made
And I wonder if you really wanted it this way
And in your memory they even hung a plaque for you (for you)

And I have learned so much since you been gone
And I have done so little for so long.
So now I’ll settle up these grievances
And focus on the savory
And wave all these discrepancies away.
And I’ll figure out these misconceptions
Give out faith at my discretion
Live a life that you would think was sane (sane)”

* Chris Carrabba used to be in a band called Further Seems Forever before he started Dashboard Confessional. The name for the new band came from the song “The Sharp Hint of New Tears”, that contains the phrase “On the way home/This car hears my confession” on the lyrics.

* Justin was a cousin of Chris who died while they were young; this is one of few stories known about DC lyrics.

* The title of this EP is the reason why some people tend to believe that Justin drown. But there is another a theory that says that Justin died on a car accident. Those three song were written in 1998, but only recorded in 2001.

* Justin and Chris celebrated birthdays at the same day. That’s the reason for this line.

* The songs on this EP are rarely played on concerts. Some believe that the deep meaning behind it is the reason why Carrabba don’t play or talk about than much.

“The Way She Feels*
[Between Trees – The Story and The Song*]
She’s upset*
Bad day
Heads for the dresser drawer to drive the pain away
Nothing good can come of this
She opens it, there’s nothing there
There’s only leftover tears
Mom and Dad had no right*
She screams
The anger runs down both of her cheeks

Then she closed her eyes
And found relief in a knife
The blood flows as she cries

All alone, the way she feels
Left alone to deal with
All the pain-drenched sorrow relief
Bite the lip, just forget the bleeding

Then she closed her eyes
And found relief in a knife
The blood flows as she cries
Wow, oh

Then she closed her eyes
And found relief in a knife
The blood flows as she cries

Curled up, she’s on the floor
Relief left her
She had hoped for something more from it
(Hoped from something more from it)
He leans down to comfort her
She is weaping and he
Wraps his arms around and around and around and

The deeper you cut, the deeper I hurt
The deeper you cut, it only gets worse
The deeper you cut, the deeper i hurt
The deeper you cut, it only gets worse
Gets worse

Now she’s slowly opening
Yeah, she’s slowly opening
New eyes

She opened her eyes
And found relief in his life
And put down her knives
Woah, oh
She opened her life
And found relief through his life
And put down, she put down
her life”

* This song is written about Renee, a kid with depression and cutting problems. Renee was friends with Ryan (the lead guitar and vocal for Between Trees) for a while before he step up and with other friends help Renee. What was intended to help Renee grown up and became a non-profit organization called To Write Love On Her Arms. The whole story can be read in www.twloha.com

* The Story and The Song is the first CD by Between Trees to be launched by a label. Besides The Way She Feels, the song number 7 from the album, Time To Yohe, was also written inspired by Renee story and people that deal with depression, cutting and verbal and substance (drugs, alcohol, etc) abuse.

* She = Renee

* During some time Renee’s parent found out about what she was going through and ride all the blazers they found in her room and around the house. But that was not enough and she started cutting with kitchen knifes and others.

* The video and the making-off can be seem at Youtube

Salmarnir*
[Underoath – Define the Great Line]

*The mighty one, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
Our God comes and does not keep silent, a devouring fire is before him, and a mighty tempest all around him.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge.

* Salmarnir is a ice-landic word for the bible book of Psalm.

* PS 50:(…) stands for the versicle for the following scripture.

* The scripture it self is read in Russian by the cousin of Underoath keyboard player, Chris Dudley.

* This part is yelled by Chris himself, and is the translation for English of the Psalm 50 (read before in Russian).

* In an internet forum someone posted the information that the Russian spoke in the beginning of the music is actually some kind of colloquial English, primely used in churches in the antique.

Priceless – Copeland

[Finally the Copeland song. Even though the theme of the album is well known, is really hard to find information about the songs. The only thing that the band is sure to state is about how personal and honest album is.]

“Priceless*
[Copeland – Beneath Medicine Tree*]

I remember when I’d run to you*
Through fields of white flowers
Your embrace was my air
How I needed you there
All of the world and all of its powers
Couldn’t keep your love from me

‘Cause I need you like the dragonfly’s wings need the wind
Like the orphan needs home once again
Like heaven needs more to come in
I need you here like you’ve always been

Then I waved goodbye to you*
From fields of white flowers
You were so proud of me
I was too proud to see
That all of the world and all of it’s powers
Couldn’t keep your love from me…

I need you like the dragonfly’s wings need the wind
Like the orphan needs home once again
Like heaven needs more to come in
I need you here like you’ve always been

Taking for granted all of her smiles that got away

Now I’m looking up at you
From fields of white flowers
You were so proud of me
I’m so proud of you
All of the world and all of its powers
Couldn’t keep your love from me

* In same releases the name of this song appears as Priceless (for Eleanor).

* This Copeland album has a hospital theme. The theme came from the moment that lead singer – and major writer – Aaron was going thought, the songs were written during 3 years before the album were record, and during this period Aaron had to deal with a sick girlfriend (that later became his wife) and the death of his grandmother. The theme can be seen even by the album cover: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/3183DN2YVVL._AA240_.jpg

* This part is about the childrenhood with this grama: Eleanor

* Originally Aaron wrote the song to sing it in his grama funeral, but later it became part of the album.

[It was all set to write about a Copeland song, but this one cought my attention last night, so here we go. God Bless Youtube]

“Hey There Delilah*
[Plain White T’s – All That We Need]
Hey there Delilah,
What’s it like in New York City*?
I’m a thousand miles away,
But girl tonight you look so pretty*,
Yes you do,
Time Square can’t shine as bright as you,
I swear it’s true.

Hey there Delilah,
Don’t you worry about the distance*,
I’m right there if you get lonely,
Give this song another listen,
Close your eyes,
Listen to my voice it’s my disguise,
I’m by your side.

Oh it’s what you do to me,
What you do to me.

Hey there Delilah,
I know times are getting hard,
But just believe me girl some day,
I’ll pay the bills with this guitar*,
We’ll have it good,
We’ll have the life we knew we would,
My word is good.

Hey there Delilah,
I’ve got so much left to say,
If every simple song I wrote to you*,
Would take your breath away,
I’d write it all,
Even more in love with me you’d fall,
We’d have it all.

Oh it’s what you do to me.

A thousand miles seems pretty far,
But they’ve got planes and trains and cars,
I’d walk to you if I had no other way,
Our friends would all make fun of us,
And we’ll just laugh along because,
We know that none of them have felt this way,
Delilah I can promise you,
That by the time that we get through,
The world will never ever be the same,
And you’re to blame.

Hey there Delilah you be good,
And don’t you miss me,
Two more years and you’ll be done with school,
And I’ll be making history,
Like I do,
You’ll know it’s all because of you,
We can do whatever we want to,
Hey there Delilah here’s to you,
This one’s for you.

Oh it’s what you do to me,
What you do to me.”

* Delilah DiCrescenzo, a steeplechase runner who has good chances in the 2008 Olympic team.

* Delilah DiCrescenzo was a student of the Columbia University, which main campus lies in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of the Borough of Manhattan, in New York City. Columbia University is member of the Ivy League (League that compress the eight private institutions of higher education located in the Northeastern United States = Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University).

* Tom Higgenson (sing writer and Plain White T’s singer) said that Delilah DiCrescenzo “was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen”.

* While Delilah was in NYC, Tom was in Illinois where the band was born.

* Not THAT soon. The song was written for the 2005 album All That We Needed, but only in the summer of 2007 it became a hit in USA.

* Despite the fact that Tom Higgenson did wrote the song for DiCrescenzo, there was never a relationship between them. After been introduce by a mutual friend, Tom said to Delilah that she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and that he had “a song about you (her) already”. The already was a lie, however. “Obviously, there was no song. But I thought it was smooth…”, said Tom. It took over a year for Tom to write the song to Delilah (who was already in a relationship and blew Tom off).

PS: About the band name = It was inspired by the fact that one day the band members were looking through some books with pictures of bands such as Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and James Dean, and they were all wearing white t-shirts. So the members realized how classic and timeless those bands and white T’s were. It’s the idea of timeless and accessible music.
